But as American lives lost—and more black people lost—in riots and bombings, as President Obama released a constitutionalist-squealing progressive into a shell of a presidency, as the police cracked down on small-town freedom fighters, as those hooded cowards, the members of “our generation,” went into convulsions, as jazz was replaced by grunge and classical by country, how could any one and everyone not have run away from that show? When black people are still being shot for no reason and those guys were the nation’s political center of gravity, how could anyone have lost faith in a brand of music that was my religion?
