As much as I hate the government snooping into my Google history, the internet is a bit of a public square. One can imagine Google sending lawyers in person to go back and find anyone who has ever searched for, say, “Brangelina” in the company’s search database. To fight something like this, we need transparency and public hearings. The government doesn’t really need help in fighting this, since it already has a bunch of people going on record about its surveillance. For Google, though, the duty falls on its corporate citizen, so we might as well help it out.
